What should I look for in a professional roofing contractor?

A written proposal that outlines the work to be done, the amount that is to be charged and the terms of the warranty or warranties to be given.
Proof of liability insurance, which protects you against personal injury to you or others and against damage to your property or the property of others while the contractor is performing work on your home or building.
Proof of workers' compensation insurance, which protects the contractor's employees while working on your job.
A list of customer references, which you should check to be sure that the contractor has performed as promised. A personal reference from a satisfied customer is a better recommendation that a cheap price, and a long-term warranty from a contractor who will not honor it is worthless.
